What Does A Migraine Aura Look Like?

Most people think of a migraine as excruciating pain, but pain is actually the third step of a migraine episode. Before the pain, a majority of migraine sufferers experience the pre-headache phase and the aura phase.

If you have ever heard of the aura phase, you’ve probably wondered, “What does a migraine aura look like?”

Although many people speak only of the aura’s affect on the eyes, the aura is much more than that. Migraineurs (those who have migraines) and their physicians know that some or all of the following may be part of an aura.

* auditory hallucinations – you hear sounds that aren’t there
* confusion in thinking – things aren’t making sense
* decrease in your hearing ability
* difficult finding the words you want
* dizziness
* increased feel and touch – or reduced feel and touch
* olfactory hallucinations – you smell odors that aren't there
* partial paralysis
* sight loss – partial or blurry vision
* tingling or numbness of your face
* visual hallucinations – you see sights that aren’t there: flashing bright lights, wavy lines, spots, or zigzag lines

For now, however, we will look only at the last symptom in the list: visual hallucinations. What does a migraine aura look like in terms of its visual hallucinations?

Migraine Aura – Visual Hallucinations

The visual effects vary from person to person, although there are similarities. The changing activity of the nerves that coil around the blood vessels can produce partial loss of vision or intense colors and patterns.

1. For some people, the effects begin as a small dot in front of one or both eyes. The dot is a blind spot – a spot resembling the effect of accidentally looking toward a bare light bulb. Over a period of 30 to 60 minutes, the dot begins to grow. It flashes. Gradually, it changes shape, becoming an oval, a broken circle, or the shape of a V on its side. Off-center, the changing dot grows further and slowly moves to the peripheral vision. It creates repetitions of itself, chaining them together like linked circles, triangles, or other geometric patterns.

2. Other people describe a migraine aura as zigzag patterns in complimentary colors, such as red and green, yellow and blue. The colors look good together, and are pleasing to watch as long as the migraine pain has not begun. These people may also feel that they are look through smoke or smog. At times, it seems their eyes are shaded by a mini-blind with a crescent shape.

3. Artistically minded migraineurs are likely to say that migraine aura look like op-art paintings. They describe psychedelic, neon borders around a primary zigzag design in black and white. In fact, more than one sufferer has observed that, were it not for the onset of excruciating pain, the visual phenomenon would be very entertaining – something you might pay to witness!

4. One German artist, Delia Malchert, undertook to represent her aura’s visual hallucinations in paintings. Her migraine aura look like scotoma: points in her visual field where vision is absent or reduced. They usually begin with a small spot near or at the centre of her vision. The spot grows gradually, darkening her vision and developing a jagged, zigzag rim of black and white. The rim emits quick flashes as it rotates rapidly around the darkening center. Before long, the scintillating and darkening increase to become a temporary visual disorder that is almost like legal blindness. At that point in the aura, the center part of what she sees is very blurry. To her, the hallucinations of a migraine aura are irritating and annoying rather than entertaining, even though they are not always followed by migraine pain. She does admit, though, that they can be aesthetically pleasing.

What does a migraine aura look like?

These phrases sum up some of the many visual perceptions migraine sufferers may experience.

* lightning bolts like jagged “Z” patterns – most common
* psychedelic patterns of bright colors
* sparkling zigzag lines that rotate
* random patterns of curved and straight lines
* spider webs in front of the eyes
* lattice work, grids, or mini-blinds in front of the eyes
* a spiraling tunnel
* kaleidoscopes of changing colors and patterns
* objects seeming to be larger, smaller, nearer, or farther away
* objects seeming to be tilted
* double vision – seeing two of everything
* stationary objects appearing to move

Migraine aura sufferers agree that whatever the visual effects, they cannot be escaped. Closing the eyes or trying to look around the effects does not help.

Do You Have Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia Symptoms

The number one fibromyalgia symptom is chronic pain felt over the entire body. With the pain one might experience tingling of the skin, muscle aches, spasms of the muscles, weakness in the joints, and nerve pain. Sleep loss is also a fibromyalgia symptom. Some researchers believe the sleep loss is related to interrupted sleep patterns. These interruptions come from bursts of brain activity and prevent you from reaching stage four or deep sleep.

Many people enter a state know as brain fog. While in this state people have slower brain waves and cognitive deficits. All of these fibromyalgia symptoms are related to sleep interruptions.

Other fibromyalgia symptoms are:

Chronic fatigue
Chronic paresthesia
Irritable bowel
Chronic bladder conditions
Skin disorders
Headaches

Not everyone has all the fibromyalgia symptoms and although the pain can be widespread many have it occur in specific locations. Many have pain in the neck, shoulders, back, and hips.

Fibromyalgia symptoms may appear after a trauma but there is no known connection between a specific event and the onset of fibromyalgia. Weather can worsen fibromyalgia symptoms in some people. Other illnesses can also cause symptoms to change. Unlike arthritis fibromyalgia does not cause inflammation but anti-inflammatory medicines have lessened pain levels in some patients.

Fibromyalgia symptoms that may increase discomfort levels are dampness and cold weather, as well as changes in barometric pressure. Increases in physical activity, lack of sleep and increases in ones stress level, may also add to the discomfort level.

Fibromaylgia symptoms usually develop slowly overtime. Some doctors believe symptoms may even occur in early childhood. Fribromaylgia is real and the symptoms limit many people in their daily lives.

Trigger Point Therapy

Many of the people that come to Massage Therapists and Bodyworkers are seeking someone to help them with muscular pain and chronic tension from Myofascial Trigger Points. They've heard that Trigger Point Therapy is a great way to naturally relieve their pain and restore function.

Trigger Point Therapy is used when Myofascial Trigger Points are present in a person's muscles. Myofascial Trigger Points, usually just called Trigger Points, are hyperirritable spots in a muscle associated with a palpable "knot" or "taut band" in the muscle tissue. Trigger Points are painful on compression and can refer pain and tenderness to other areas. Trigger Points are usually ischemic and often cause an entire muscle to be painful, too tight, weak, and more easily fatigued. Trigger Points can be caused by overworking or overstressing muscles, direct trauma to muscles, or even sustained chills. Trigger Points can be either the cause or a contributing factor of a wide variety of painful conditions.

Trigger Point Therapy directly targets the trigger points and the muscles in which they're found. In Trigger Point Therapy the Massage Therapist carefully seeks out the trigger points in a muscle with their fingers and uses specific compression techniques, friction strokes, and stretches which make the trigger points release and seemingly melt away. The release of the trigger point usually results in a rapid decrease or complete elimination of muscular pain. Trigger Point Therapy is a versatile technique and is often employed to treat low back pain, TMJ pain, headaches and migraines, whiplash, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, hip pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and more. Trigger Point Therapy can be used by itself as a stand-alone treatment, or it can be used during a Swedish massage, Sports massage, or Medical massage and as part of Neuromuscular Therapy or Deep Tissue Massage procedures.

Trigger Point Therapy does have a reputation as being a painful therapy to receive. However, despite its reputation as a "no pain, no gain" type of technique Trigger Point Therapy can be quite comfortable to receive. Some clients may experience some mild discomfort during the treatment. This mild discomfort is often described as a "good pain" that rates low on a standard pain scale and is actually welcomed by most clients. Try Trigger Point Therapy. You have nothing to lose except your pain.

Have You Tried Reflexology - Wonderful Pain Relief?

BENEFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY

Reduces
- Stress and tension
- Headaches, stiff necks
- Back pain
- Sinus symptoms
Relieves

Sore, swollen, aching feet, bunion pain

Joint pain

Indigestion, constipation, digestive disorders
Allergy symptoms
PMT, menopausal symptoms

Boosts and balances

Circulation, nervous and lymphatic functions

So what is reflexology? General Definition : Reflexology is the application of pressure using thumb and fingers on reflex points in the feet and hands to stimulate a physiological change in the body. IT IS NOT A FOOT MASSAGE! If a body part is not functioning correctly, uric acid, calcium and mineral deposits may accumulate in the reflexes, impeding energy flow and circulation. A skilled Professional Reflexologist can assist in breaking down and dispersing these deposits, helping to restore the body to better health.

It is medically accepted that 75% of all illness and disease are stress related.

Relaxation is the first step towards normalising nerve and blood supply to all areas of the body which then encourages better circulation for the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the cells. Glands are then able to normalise their function.

Each foot has approximately 7500 nerve endings which signal to the brain. There are also 26 bones, 19 muscles and 13 leg muscles, 50 ligaments, 3 arches and approximately 800 metres of blood, nerves and lymph vessels.

Where can you do reflexology? Reflexology is typical done on the feet. Reflexology can be done on the ears and the hands. This is commonly used when you cannot work the feet, e.g. people who do not have legs or feet, people who do not like having their feet touched, when it is awkward to work the feet, there are referral points on the hands. The feet are the preferred area to work as they are a larger and easier to access.

Hand reflexology is beneficial if people have hand problems eg arthritis or carpel tunnel. There are 26 bones in the hand and the medial, radial and ulnar nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Hand reflexology is non threatening and it can be done in a public place without feeling uncomfortable. We can do it ourselves easier on our hands than our feet and can be done when waiting - for a bus, plane, outside the bosses office!

We use our hands as an extension of ourselves, we say the feet represent our direction in life our hands show our emotions, we talk with our hands, we use them to work and do our hobbies, there is very little that we do not do without our hands, they are our sensory guide. However this means that they are less sensitive than our feet.

The World Health Authority recognises the reflexology ear chart. Reflexology is also accepted by most health funds in Australia.

How do you choose a Reflexologist? When choosing a Reflexologist, make sure you choose a Professional Reflexologist. In Australia look for someone with the initials RAA behind their name (Reflexology Association of Australia) or ICR (International Council of Reflexology). This means that the Reflexologist has done most of their studies in reflexology (as opposed to massage therapy) and will know a number of different reflexology techniques and will have studied different aspects to reflexology (eg meridians, gaits, mobilisation techniques, nutrition etc - however there are many more aspects to reflexology than one way of doing a treatment).

There are many specialities in reflexology eg, infertility, insomnia, back pain, menopause, RSI, depression, autism, elderly, children etc. Most reflexologists will be able to do a general treatment to assist symptoms of any medical problem, which a client may present to them, however you may be able to find a Remedial Reflexologist who specialises in your symptoms. For example my specialties are women’s health (fertility, maternity, PMT, Menopause) and any back problems, although I have had success with many other ailments. To remain a member of the Association they also have to gain a number of CPE points each year (continuing Professional Education), which means they will be up to date on the latest research and techniques.

Over the years there has been much research into the efficacy of reflexology and there are many cases available on the internet. For example : In Switzerland, nurses working with cancer patients routinely use reflexology to decrease pain and in the UK a purpose built cancer unit is providing reflexology, aromatherapy and treatment for lymph oedema. Reflexology is recognised by the National Health Service in the UK and the National Health Authority (UK) recognises it as a treatment in easing symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. Research closer to home was done using reflexology for oedema in pregnancy by Gosford Hospital.

Studies in China, Denmark, South Africa, USA and Europe have shown its effectiveness on a wide range of conditions including migraine, respiratory problems, infertility, renal conditions, musculoskeletal problems, PMT, colic in infants and withdrawal from drug abuse symptoms. It is widely used in hospitals in China and many companies worldwide have reflexologists on staff to combat stress in the workplace.

I have found it beneficial with clients who have back pain that does not ease, clients who have a lot of feet pain and been everywhere else, eg. doctors, physio, podiatrists, ortho surgeons, but no one who actually works all the muscles, tendons, nerve endings for a whole hour! This is what a reflexologist does and the relief is noticeable!!! I often have people hobbling in to my clinic with feet problems and dancing out!

With back pain and general pain or allergies, I find that while there is noticeable relief after the first treatment, the difference is more noticeable after a couple of treatments - however this is not always the case! Reflexology also compliments chiropractic treatments as it eases muscle stiffness commonly found with adjustments and if done before makes the bones easier to manipulate.

I trust that this has whetted your appetite to at least give reflexology a try. You will experience the benefits after the first treatment. A treatment programme would typically be once a week for four to six weeks, then depending on the condition being treated, once a month or more frequently if you have the finances! It lasts for just under an hour.

It is a great immune system booster and central nervous system relaxer. I have clients who come to see me weekly because it helps them handle stressful work loads and keeps them healthy and motivated! My clinics are in Oxenford and Windaroo, Queensland, Australia.

Chronic Headaches After A Concussion

You may develop chronic headaches right after having a concussion. A concussion is a mild head injury. It happens when you become unconscious for a period of time. The doctors would have to observe you for a couple of hours in the hospital to ensure that you have not suffered any brain damage nor have any bleeding in the brain. If you look fine, you can expect to be discharged after 24 hours.

Initially, you may experience headaches after the concussion. Your headache symptoms may continue on for a couple of weeks, if not longer. This may cause you to feel anxious as to whether you are actually fine after the head injury. Mostly, there is nothing to fear as these side effects are temporary.

Here are some symptoms that you may have for the first two weeks after you sustain a concussion:

1. Directly after the concussion happens you may get a headache from the bruising that occurs. If you push yourself too hard or too soon you will suffer from further headaches that are caused by stress and fatigue. Headache medications will not help here. Therefore, get some rest and your headache will go away. If this does not help and you have a severe, continuous headache then you really should seek medical attention.

2. You may be dizzy because the balance organs in your ears have been upset. This is why any sudden movements of your head will cause you to become dizzy or you may feel as though you are floating. This will get better with time.

3. Your sight may be blurred and you may not like being in bright light. It may help to wear sunglasses, even indoors. This should get better with time but if not then you should see your doctor.

4. You may feel exhausted after doing only a little bit of activity. In this case you really need to rest or risk prolonging your recovery.

5. Your brain may temporarily downsize in order to allow itself to heal and thus you may suffer from short-term memory loss. You need to take time to rest here.

6. It is possible that you will become clumsy. This is due to problems with spatial awareness. If this is happening to you then you should not drive.

7. If you have suffered a concussion you may have a shorter temper and be more irritable. This is because your brain is recovering and thus has limited its resources to the essentials of survival. This is another thing that will improve with time.

Take a couple of days off. Report any abnormal symptoms or if your headaches become worse to your doctor rightaway!

Overconsumption of drugs for headache relief can result in rebound headaches and worsening migraines. Get more information on headache remedies here on this site at http://www.headacheremedysecrets.com
